Some places stay with you.

The trip ends and everyone goes home. Years later you still remember how steep the last stretch was and who was there with you.

From a flat map
to a printed piece.

Here is how a piece like this comes together, from a flat outline to the finished object.

Four steps, up close.

  1. Flat, north-up outline of Brazil in an original map illustration.

    The place

It starts with a place that means something to you. Here, it is Brazil.

  2. Illustrative preparation workspace showing the Brazil terrain model on an unbranded build plate.
    Illustration

    The shape

We build a 3D model of the terrain and work out the details with you, such as size and what to highlight.

  3. Digital visualization of successive printed layers building the Brazil terrain relief and its gold detail.

    The layers

The printer builds it one thin layer at a time, so the mountains and valleys have real height you can feel.

  4. Digital visualization of the complete dark Brazil terrain object with its gold detail.

    The object

The finished piece is yours to keep, or to give to someone who was there with you.

It could be a GPS track from a trip, the town you grew up in or a ski mountain you have been going to for years. A place name and a few words about why it matters are enough to start.

About the studio

SideBox Studios began during a medical leave. Today the studio designs and 3D prints the places people want to remember.

It started by bringing together a background in IT and a creative side, with software that turns real terrain into 3D models.
